Advantages and Disadvantages of Three Steel Structure Fastening Connection Methods

The connection methods of steel structures can be divided into three types: welding connection, rivet connection and bolt connection. Welding is the most common application. High-strength bolted connections have developed rapidly in recent years and are used more and more. Rivet connections have been basically replaced by welding and high-strength bolted connections and are rarely used. Each of the three connection methods has its advantages and disadvantages. This article mainly introduces the advantages and disadvantages of these three connection methods for steel structure connections.

First of all, the steel structure connection methods include welding connection, riveting connection and bolt connection. As shown below:

Advantages and disadvantages of connection methods:

1. The advantages of rivet connection are: good plasticity, toughness and integrity, small connection deformation, reliable force transmission, good fatigue performance under dynamic load, and easy quality inspection, especially for heavy-duty and directly dynamic load structures. The disadvantages of rivet connection are: complex structure, large amount of steel, troublesome construction, loud riveting noise, and poor working conditions. It is almost no longer used in engineering.

2. Welding is the most important connection method for steel structures. The advantage is that structures of any shape can be connected with welds. The structure is simple, saves labor and materials, and can realize automated operations and high production efficiency. No drilling required, saving labor and time. It has good air tightness and water tightness, large structural rigidity and good overall performance. The disadvantage of welded connections is that there is a heat-affected zone near the weld, and the material will become brittle. The residual stress of welding will make the structure prone to brittle damage. The residual deformation will change the shape and size of the structure. Once welding cracks occur, they will easily expand.

3. Advantages of bolted connections: The construction process is simple and the installation is convenient. It is suitable for construction site installation and connection, and can better ensure the progress and quality of the project. It has the advantages of rivet connection plasticity, good toughness, reliable force transmission, easy installation and disassembly, can be reused many times, and has small connection deformation. Disadvantages of bolted connections: Because the openings will weaken the cross-section of the components to a certain extent, and the connected components need to overlap each other, or additional connecting components such as connecting plates and angle steels are added, so there are more consumables.

In short, steel structure connection is crucial in steel structure construction projects. It can be said to be the lifeblood of the overall steel structure building and is directly related to the stability of the steel structure building. Therefore, mastering the steel structure connection method is the most basic. Understanding welding The advantages and disadvantages of the three steel structure connection methods of connection, bolt connection and rivet connection are also necessary.
